Kelt Capital believes a strong and connected community is key to a region’s success and as a consequence has been involved in the design and expansion of a number of leading community initiatives. From the creation of New Zealand’s most affluent horse race to helping the Hawke’s Bay Magpies return to the top division, Kelt Capital has always looked to help the community grow.
Kelt Capital Stakes
Kelt Capital launched the Kelt Capital Stakes in 1991. Their ambition was to transform the NZ racing industry by building a world class event that would act as a stepping stone to the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
Beginning as a $50,000 Group III race, the Kelt Capital Stakes grew into the country’s Premier Group I race with a record-breaking prize pool of $2,000,000 in 2007.
In conjunction with the feature event, Kelt Capital worked with Hawke’s Bay Racing and wider industry to create a three-day carnival called The Kelt Capital Spring Carnival. The carnival featured three days of Group I racing and became a flagship event across Australasia.
Sam Kelt received New Zealand’s most prestigious racing award, The Mercedes New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Award, in recognition of this remarkable feat.

Kelt Capital Magpies
In 2005 Kelt Capital was approached by the Chairman of Hawke’s Bay Rugby to become the lead sponsor the Hawke’s Bay Magpies. At the time, the Magpies sat in the second division and Kelt Capital came onboard with the ambition of taking them back to the premier division.
Beginning as a $50,000 p.a sponsor and voluntarily increasing this to $220,000, Kelt Capital enabled the Magpies to scout better talent and grow the clubs revenue. This helped ensure they were successful in rejoining the premier division.
Shortly after returning to the premier division, the Magpies went on to make three consecutive semi finals in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Kelt Capital is extremely proud of this achievement and continues to be an avid supporter of the Hawke’s Bay Magpies.

Kelt Capital Horse of the Year
In 2006 Kelt Capital teamed up with Kevin and Warwick Hansen to transform the Hawke’s Bay Horse of the Year from a provincial horse show into an internationally recognised equestrian event.
This was achieved by raising significant financial support through Kelt Capital and other sponsorship to develop a substantial prize-money pool across the many events. The most coveted of these was the Horse of the Year title, which coupled with the wider festival, attracted numerous riders from all over the world.
By successfully creating an event with an international repertoire, the Kelt Capital Horse of the Year was able to generate a huge economic return for the region, including an estimated $12,000,000 in 2006.

Kelt Capital Hockey Academy
The Kelt Capital Hockey Academy was established in 2004. Before its ultimate merger into Hawke’s Bay Hockey, over 2,500 children experienced a Kelt Capital Academy programme.
The children ranged from decile 1 through to decile 10 school children. Many ‘at risk children’ were mentored through their difficulties. The Academy delivered a number of Black Sticks Men and Women.
The Academy provided paid coaching employment to 12 Black Sticks Men and Women and imported New Zealand’s two most qualified coaches from South Africa and Belgium to manage and develop the academy business and programmes. Both of these coaches have gone on to hold down major international coaching roles.
Kelt Capital contributed over $600,000 to the Academy project. Sam Kelt was awarded the prestigious, and rarely awarded, Pakistan Trophy for Outstanding Contribution to Hockey.
